Abstract

Maternal mental health education and depression screening had not been integrated into the routine antenatal classes conducted at Posyandu Seroja, within the service area of UPTD Parigi Public Health Center, South Tangerang City, limiting the early identification of psychological problems among pregnant women. This community service program aimed to improve maternal mental health literacy by integrating mental health education and depression screening into antenatal classes. The program involved 19 pregnant women and employed a participatory educational approach consisting of program socialization, pre-test, depression risk screening using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), interactive lectures, group discussions, and post-test. Participants' knowledge and attitudes were assessed using validated and reliable questionnaires, while the screening results were analyzed descriptively. The findings showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 6.95 to 7.42 and the mean attitude score from 21.21 to 21.95 following the educational intervention. In addition, four of the 19 participants (21.1%) were identified as being at risk of depression and were referred for further follow-up according to the existing health service procedures. The program improved participants' understanding of maternal mental health while providing preliminary information to support early detection of psychological problems in primary healthcare settings. Integrating mental health education and depression screening into antenatal classes is a feasible community-based approach to strengthening maternal mental health promotion, prevention, and early detection within primary healthcare services.
