Abstract

Diarrhea remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five in developing countries, including Indonesia. Unsafe drinking water sources and inadequate household drinking water management have been identified as important environmental risk factors for diarrheal diseases, particularly in communities located near municipal landfill sites where groundwater contamination may occur. Muara Fajar Subdistrict, Pekanbaru, is situated adjacent to the Muara Fajar Municipal Landfill, making it vulnerable to environmental pollution that may adversely affect community health. This study aimed to investigate the association between household drinking water sources, drinking water management practices, and the incidence of diarrhea among children under five in Muara Fajar. An observational analytical study with a case-control design was conducted involving 66 participants, comprising 33 cases and 33 controls. Cases were selected using total sampling, whereas controls were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-square test to estimate p-values and Odds Ratios (ORs). The results showed that there was no statistically significant association between household drinking water sources and the incidence of diarrhea among children under five in Muara Fajar (p = 0.159; OR = 1.00).
