Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of driving frustration on aggressive driving behavior among motorcycle riders in Jakarta, with traffic-congestion-related stress acting as a mediating variable. The study was motivated by the high level of traffic congestion in Jakarta, which affects riders’ psychological conditions, such as frustration and stress during driving. This research employed a quantitative approach with a causal research design using mediation analysis. The participants were 385 motorcycle riders aged 18–25 years who lived or carried out daily activities in Jakarta and were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a driving frustration scale, a driving stress scale, and an aggressive driving behavior scale. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with WarpPLS software. The results indicated that driving frustration had a positive and significant effect on stress, stress had a positive and significant effect on aggressive driving behavior, while driving frustration did not have a significant direct effect on aggressive driving behavior. Furthermore, stress significantly mediated the effect of driving frustration on aggressive driving behavior. These findings suggest that frustration caused by traffic congestion first increases driving stress, which subsequently contributes to aggressive driving behavior.
