Abstract

Environmental issues are driving a shift in the textile industry toward eco-fashion based on natural materials. The village of Baros, Bantul, has an abundance of coastal flora, but the development of local ecoprint crafts has been hampered by monotonous patterns, colours that fade easily, and designs that lack competitiveness. This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to apply a motif engineering approach to enhance the aesthetic value, technical quality, and economic value of products produced by the Lalita Eco-Print Artisans Group. The activity was carried out using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, involving 15 artisans through four stages: Diagnosis & Mapping (FGD), Joint Experimentation, Quality Testing & Observation, and Standardisation (SOP). The results of the project demonstrated an improvement in the artisans’ technical skills in applying symmetrical compositions, mirroring techniques, determining the centre of interest, as well as multi-stage fixation and mordanting (using alum, tunjung, and lime). This approach successfully shifted the artisans’ mindset from a trial-and-error approach to a more professional and environmentally conscious (green awareness) approach, while also strengthening the group’s social capital. This approach has successfully shifted the artisans’ mindset from a trial-and-error approach to a more professional and environmentally conscious one, while also strengthening the group’s social capital. The resulting fabric products are art-wear quality, 100% biodegradable, feature highly defined leaf vein patterns, offer superior colourfastness, and convey the local narrative of Baros’s coastal vegetation (ketapang leaves, coastal teak, and Rhizophora mangroves).
