Abstract

The increasing use of social media provides various benefits to society but also presents several risks, including misinformation, online fraud, misuse of personal data, and threats to account security. This community service activity aimed to improve participants’ understanding of digital literacy and the safe and responsible use of social media. The activity was conducted in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, involving 30 participants consisting of youth, homemakers, micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) actors, and village officials. The program was carried out through outreach sessions, interactive discussions, demonstrations, simulations, and hands-on practice, while the evaluation employed a one-group pre-test–post-test design. Five indicators were assessed, namely digital literacy, social media account security, personal data protection, identification of misinformation and online fraud, and social media ethics. The data were analyzed descriptively by comparing the mean pre-test and post-test scores. The results showed that the participants’ average score increased from 56.4 on the pre-test to 85.2 on the post-test, representing an increase of 28.8 points. Improvements were observed across all indicators, with the largest increases found in social media account security and the identification of misinformation and online fraud. These findings indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding after participating in the digital literacy activity. Further evaluation is needed to assess the sustainability of this understanding and its application to digital security practices in everyday social media use.
