Formulation and Evaluation of Acne Spot Gel Preparations of Salicylic Acid and Sulfur with a Combination of Propylene Glycol and Carbomer Yuyun Darma Ayu Ningrum; Rizal Roffada Hanif; Elizza Risqi Sanaya

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a skin condition with a high prevalence in Indonesia, especially among adolescents. Salicylic acid and sulfur are known to have keratolytic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities, making them widely used in acne treatment. In this study, salicylic acid and sulfur were formulated as an acne spot gel preparation using a combination of propylene glycol and carbomer. The physical properties of the acne spot gel preparation are significantly influenced by the concentration of propylene glycol and carbomer. Therefore, optimization of these two components is necessary to produce a stable and effective gel preparation. Methods: Eight formulas were developed using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. All formulas were evaluated for their physical characteristics to determine the optimum formula. The optimum formulas were subjected to cycling tests and analyzed using the Paired T-Test method. Results: The optimum formula for an acne spot gel containing salicylic acid and sulfur has physical characteristics including a yellow color, a distinctive sulfur aroma, and a gel texture with a homogeneous mixture. The preparation has a pH of 6.47, a spreadability of 5.96 cm, an adhesiveness of 10.13 seconds, and a viscosity of 11,291 cPs. The optimum formula is obtained from a combination of 14% propylene glycol and 1% carbomer. Conclusion: The optimum acne spot gel formula containing salicylic acid and sulfur meets the criteria for a good gel preparation and shows adequate physical stability.
