Abstract

Climate change has emerged as one of the major challenges for the banking industry in the future. Climate change phenomena have the potential to increase credit risk through microeconomic transmission channels. This study aims to examine and identify the resilience of Regional Development Banks (RDBs) in Indonesia to cli-mate-related credit risk. The research employs an accounting-based stress testing approach. Bank resilience is assessed through an increase in the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio, adjusted to the hydrometeorological disaster risk profile of each RDB’s main operational region. The research sample consists of eleven banks. The findings indicate that the majority of RDBs are classified as resilient. However, two out of the eleven RDBs are identified as vulnerable to climate-related credit risk, namely Bank Pembangunan Daerah Sumut in North Sumatra Province and Bank Pembangunan Daerah Nagari in West Sumatra Province. Mitigation efforts for cli-mate-related credit risk can be undertaken by strengthening capital adequacy and integrating climate risk into the banks’ risk management frameworks.
