Abstract

This book written by a former Japanese ambassador, Takeo lugchi, represents one of the first sustained academic efforts to re-examine the attack on Pearl Harbor through legal evidence and diplomatic records from Japanese perspective. Lguchi publication of the book aims at identification of the false ideas that has distorted historical facts. Therefore, the published work is driven by a stated commitment to correcting what he perceives as distortions in the historical records.  The author addresses the long-standing question of why Japan attacked the U.S. naval fleet at Pearl Harbour without declaring a formal war and how this action was connected to the simultaneous Japanese landing on the same day at Kota Bharu against British forces. Lguchi investigates whether the failure lay with the Japanese Navy, which preferred a surprise attack to ensure success. Given that the author’s father served as a subordinate official in the Japanese embassy, Iguchi appears inclined to defend the embassy’s role while placing primary responsibility on the military and the Foreign Ministry.
