Abstract

The Boko Haram insurgency remains one of the most significant threats to Nigeria's national security since the country's return to democratic governance in 1999. Since its violent uprising in 2009, the group has caused widespread killings, kidnappings, destruction of infrastructure, mass displacement, and severe socio-economic disruption, particularly in North-Eastern Nigeria. The insurgency has also evolved into a transnational security challenge affecting countries within the Lake Chad Basin. This study examines the impact of Boko Haram on Nigeria's national security, focusing on its military, political, economic, humanitarian, and social consequences. A qualitative descriptive research design was adopted, relying on documentary analysis of secondary data from academic publications, government reports, policy documents, and international organizations. The study is anchored on Human Security Theory and State Fragility Theory, which explain how governance failures, socio-economic deprivation, and weak institutions contributed to the emergence and persistence of the insurgency. Findings reveal that Boko Haram has weakened state authority, disrupted education and agriculture, intensified humanitarian crises, increased internal displacement, and undermined regional security cooperation. The study concludes that sustainable peace requires more than military action and recommends integrated measures including intelligence strengthening, institutional reforms, socio-economic development, community engagement, deradicalization programmes, enhanced border security, regional collaboration, and long-term peacebuilding initiatives.
