Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the uang japuik custom within the Pariaman community, specifically in Nagari Sungai Sirah Kuranji Hulu, Padang Pariaman Regency. The uang japuik custom is a marriage tradition among the Pariaman people that remains preserved to this day. However, in practice, the custom has undergone changes over time due to various factors. This research focuses on three key aspects: the dynamics of changes in uang japuik practices, the factors influencing these changes, and the negotiation process involved in determining the uang japuik amount. The study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Research informants included traditional leaders, community figures, parents, prospective brides and grooms, and members of the general public. Research findings indicate that the uang japuik practice is still maintained as part of the cultural identity of the Pariaman community, although its implementation is undergoing changes. The determination of the uang japuik amount now takes into account the prospective groom’s family’s economic capacity, as well as his educational background, occupation, and social status. The negotiation process involves customary deliberations—engaging ninik mamak, urang sumando, and the parents of both prospective spouses—to reach an agreement that does not place an undue burden on either party. Consequently, the community needs to make efforts to preserve the uang japuik tradition by adapting its implementation to the social realities of modern society.
