Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect mirror drill and ball drop drill training on the reaction speed of karate kumite athletes. This quantitative study employed an experimental method with a pre-test post-test two-group design. The sample consisted of 20 active kumite athletes from the Zenteka Karate Club Lembang Dojo, selected via purposive sampling. The samples were equally divided into two groups using the ordinal pairing technique to ensure equivalent baseline abilities: Group A (mirror drill training, n=10) and Group B (ball drop drill training, n=10). The training program was conducted for 6 weeks with a frequency of 3 times per week. The reaction speed was measured using two instruments: the ruler drop test (ms) and a smartphone-based reaction speed measurement application (seconds). Data were analyzed using paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The paired samples t-test results showed a significant improvement in reaction speed for both instruments ($p = 0.000$). The mean score of the Ruler Test improved from 174.41 ± 16.70 ms to 153.07 ± 21.19 ms, while the Reaction Apps mean score improved from 3.180,65 ± 360 ms menjadi 3.009,95 ± 320 ms.± 0.32 seconds. The independent samples t-test on the gain scores indicated no significant difference in effectiveness between the two training groups ($p > 0.05$). This study concludes that mirror drill and ball drop drill training have an equivalent level of effectiveness in enhancing the reaction speed of karate kumite athletes. Keywords: mirror drill, ball drop drill, reaction speed, kumite, karate.
