Abstract

Population is a crucial factor in a country's development process. Populations not only serve as objects of development benefiting from various development programs, but also as subjects of development, key actors in the implementation of development itself. This article aims to analyze the role of population as both a subject and an object of development, and its implications for sustainable development. The method used is a literature study, reviewing various scientific sources related to population and development. The results of the study indicate that the quality of human resources, education levels, health, and community participation are the main factors determining the success of development. Therefore, development policies must be oriented towards improving the quality of the population so that they can contribute optimally to the national development process. This study aims to analyze the role of population as both a subject and an object of development and to identify various challenges and opportunities that arise in the national development process. The method used in this research is a literature study, reviewing various scientific sources, books, journals, government documents, and relevant population data. The analysis is conducted descriptively to comprehensively understand the relationship between population dynamics and development. The results of the study indicate that population quality, as indicated by levels of education, health, work productivity, and the ability to adapt to technological change, has a significant influence on development success. Furthermore, high population growth, uneven population distribution, urbanization, unemployment, and poverty remain challenges that need to be addressed through integrated development policies. On the other hand, the demographic bonus currently being experienced by Indonesia presents a significant opportunity to accelerate economic growth and enhance national competitiveness if supported by improvements in the quality of human resources and the provision of adequate employment opportunities. Therefore, people-centered development is a crucial approach. The population is positioned not only as the beneficiaries of development but also as key actors contributing to development planning, implementation, and evaluation. The synergy between population policies and sustainable development is expected to create a prosperous, productive, and highly competitive society in facing global challenges.
