Abstract

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common abdominal surgical emergencies encountered in young adults and requires prompt diagnosis and management to prevent complications such as perforation, intra-abdominal abscess, and peritonitis. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, diagnostic process, surgical management, and clinical outcomes of a young adult patient with acute appendicitis through a case report combined with an evidence-based literature review. Case data were obtained from the patient's medical records, including medical history, physical examination, laboratory investigations, imaging studies, operative procedures, and postoperative evaluation, and were subsequently compared with current international guidelines and recent scientific evidence. The findings demonstrate that integrating patient history, physical examination, laboratory parameters, clinical scoring systems, and imaging modalities improves diagnostic accuracy and reduces the rate of negative appendectomies. Appendectomy, particularly through the laparoscopic approach, remains the gold standard treatment because it offers a high therapeutic success rate, a lower risk of complications, a shorter hospital stay, and faster postoperative recovery compared with conservative management. Although antibiotic therapy may be considered in carefully selected patients with uncomplicated appendicitis, surgical intervention continues to provide superior long-term clinical outcomes. Therefore, the implementation of a comprehensive diagnostic approach, timely clinical decision-making, and adherence to evidence-based guidelines are essential for improving patient safety and the quality of surgical care in cases of acute appendicitis.
