Abstract

The shift of religious content consumption from physical spaces to short-video platforms marks a significant transformation in the religiosity landscape of Indonesian youth. This study aims to analyze the role of TikTok in shaping the perception, expression, and religious behavior of Generation Z through the For You Page (FYP) algorithm and characteristics of viral digital dakwah content. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with digital ethnography, data were gathered through participatory observation of religious content trends on TikTok and in-depth interviews with 10 Gen Z informants selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis reveals that religiously-themed TikTok content from mini-lectures and Islamic self-reminders to viral Quranic audio sounds consistently penetrates users' FYP and influences their religiosity across multiple dimensions. This research finds that TikTok functions not merely as entertainment media, but has transformed into a space for religious identity contestation and a highly personalized informal spiritual socialization agent for Generation Z. Personalization algorithms create spiritual echo chambers that simultaneously reinforce or deconstruct users' religious orientations. These findings contribute to the discourse on the mediatization of religion and highlight the urgency of critical media literacy in digital dakwah production to prevent Islamic substance from being reduced to mere visual commodity.
