Abstract

Tolerance, respect, and government support are key factors in sustaining the identity and traditions of the community. This study aims to analyze the social conditions of the Tolotang ethnic community and the ways in which its members express their beliefs through religious rituals. The Tolotang are an indigenous community that continues to preserve the customs and traditions inherited from their ancestors while living alongside a Muslim majority. They maintain social harmony and mutual respect in everyday life despite differences in religion and belief. This study employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data presentation and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Tolotang community maintains strong customary traditions in social life, with customary leaders or spiritual figures (uwa) who are highly respected. In terms of religious life, the community demonstrates tolerance toward different beliefs. Their expressions of faith through the Mappalili and Mappadendang traditions reflect gratitude, hope, and respect for God, ancestors, and the natural environment.
