Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of modality and proposition in tragic sentences in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet based on Charles J. Fillmore’s Case Grammar theory. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consisted of tragic sentences in the Indonesian translation of Hamlet, collected through documentation using reading, observing, and note-taking techniques. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed 19 case grammar data, consisting of 11 modality data and eight proposition data. The modalities included intentional, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modalities, while the propositions consisted of agentive, ergative, objective, benefactive, comitative, factitive, instrumental, and locative cases. The findings indicate that modality and proposition represent semantic relationships among sentence components and contribute to constructing conflict, action, and tragic meaning in Hamlet.
