Abstract

Surface grinding constitutes a vital machining process for producing components with high geometric surface quality, with spindle condition serving as the principal factor governing the final machining outcome. This study sets out to evaluate the performance of the spindle on a Reform PSGS-4070 AH surface grinding machine through vibration analysis, while also examining its relationship with surface roughness. An experimental approach was adopted by varying the depth of cut across five levels, with vibration recorded in the horizontal and vertical directions using a Vibroport 80, and surface roughness assessed using a Mitutoyo SJ-210 Surface Roughness Tester. The findings reveal that horizontal vibration rose sharply as the depth of cut increased, moving from Zone A (good) to Zone B (requiring attention) under ISO 10816-3, whereas vertical vibration stayed comparatively steady within Zone A throughout the trials. The resulting spectral pattern points to unbalance in the rotating element along with an early sign of disturbance in the bearing. Horizontal vibration showed a closer relationship with surface roughness than vertical vibration, whose relationship was weaker and less consistent. The safest machining condition was attained at a low depth of cut (≤0.050 mm), yielding the lowest vibration level together with consistently good surface quality.
