Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and motivations of code mixing used by Gita Savitri Devi, an Indonesian bilingual public figure, in a video from her personal YouTube channel, @gitasav, titled “Fenomena Passport Bros & Bentuk Penolakan Pria Terhadap Feminisme | Beropini eps. 93.” The study employs a qualitative descriptive design, with the researcher herself, a document checklist, and a transcription document serving as the primary instruments. Data were collected through documentation supported by repeated video observation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The types of code mixing were analyzed using Muysken’s (2000) framework, while the motivations were analyzed using Hoffmann’s (1991) framework. Based on the analysis of forty-four identified instances of code mixing, the findings reveal that Gita’s code mixing is structurally dominated by insertion, the embedding of single English words or short phrases into an Indonesian grammatical frame, while alternation occurs far less frequently and no instance of congruent lexicalization was found. In terms of motivation, Gita’s code mixing is driven predominantly by the need to talk about a particular topic and to be emphatic about something, followed by clarifying speech content, quoting somebody else, and interjection, which occurs only rarely. These findings indicate that code mixing functions as a deliberate communicative resource for naming specialized concepts precisely and for intensifying her argument at key moments throughout the video.
