Abstract

Limited maternal knowledge of postpartum danger signs may delay complication recognition and timely care seeking. Digital storytelling has the potential to support health education because it combines narrative, images, sound, and character experiences within contextual situations. This review aimed to analyze the influence of digital storytelling on mothers’ knowledge of postpartum danger signs and to identify intervention characteristics, findings, and research gaps. A systematic literature review was conducted, with reporting guided by PRISMA 2020 and critical appraisal based on JBI instruments. Databases were searched using terms related to digital storytelling, educational video, mHealth, postpartum mothers, maternal danger signs, and knowledge. Twenty-two publications issued between 2017 and 2025 were narratively synthesized according to design, population, media, comparator, instrument, and findings. The review indicated that digital and audiovisual education generally produced an overall positive direction in maternal knowledge. Educational videos, interactive mobile messages, mHealth, and community education tended to improve mothers’ recognition of danger signs, although findings were not fully consistent across studies. Direct evidence evaluating digital storytelling for knowledge of postpartum danger signs remained limited. Narrative structures may improve attention, meaning making, and memory by connecting symptoms, decisions, actions, and consequences. Content quality, culture, health literacy, access, and family involvement may influence effectiveness. Digital storytelling is promising as an educational medium for postpartum danger signs, but its effectiveness requires stronger experimental studies, validated instruments, retention assessment, and evaluation of care-seeking behavior
