Abstract

General Background Formula Society of Automotive Engineers racing vehicles require steering systems that support appropriate vehicle direction and turning characteristics. Specific Background Poor steering system design may produce turning angles that do not correspond with vehicle dimensions, while assembly considerations are also important during product manufacturing. Knowledge Gap The study addresses the practical need for an FSAE steering configuration that considers both component design and assembly requirements. Aims This study designs an FSAE racing car steering system and evaluates its components using Design for Assembly methodology, supported by three dimensional modelling in Solid Edge 2021. Results The steering system consisted of 31 listed components with a total recorded operation time of 165.66 seconds. Handling and insertion calculations were applied to the steering subassemblies, and the DFA calculations reported TA values of 0.548 for the smallest section, 1.156 for the middle section, and 1.765 for the largest section. Novelty The study combines three dimensional CAD modelling with component level handling and insertion analysis for an FSAE steering configuration. Implications The resulting concept and component analysis can support automotive mechanics in developing FSAE racing car steering systems and provide a basis for further geometric and ergonomic evaluation using Solid Edge 2021 or CATIA. Highlight: FSAE steering: DFA analysis enhances design efficiency for racing vehicles. Software aid: Solid Edge 2021 streamlines FSAE steering system development. Ergonomic focus: Design prioritizes driver comfort and vehicle performance optimization. Keywoard: FSAE vehicles, Steering system design, DFA analysis, Solid Edge 2021, Ergonomics
