Abstract

This study aims to map trends in Science Self-Efficacy (SSE) at the junior high school (SMP) level through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis for the period 2022–2026. Using the PRISMA method and adapting the 14 steps of the SLR, data were collected from databases such as Springer, Taylor & Francis, and WoS using the Publish or Perish and VOSviewer software. The results of the bibliometric analysis indicate that the SSE research network at the junior high school level remains fragmented into small clusters, with Indonesia emerging as the leading producer of publications in this dataset. Thematically, there was a shift in focus from macro-evaluative approaches (such as PISA and student engagement) in 2022–2023 toward micro-psychological and contextual approaches (such as argumentation, performance, and STEM career choices) in 2025–2026. The findings indicate a very strong positive correlation (r = 0.979) between SSE and science learning outcomes. Methodologically, correlational designs using large-scale secondary data dominate, while experimental studies remain limited. Regarding instruments, it was found that only 58% of studies explicitly reported reliability, and validity aspects were often neglected. Efficient instruments such as the Student’s Adaptive Learning Engagement in Science (SALES) are recommended due to their high reliability among middle school students. This study concludes that there is a need to strengthen global collaboration and improve the psychometric quality of instruments to support sustainable STEM education.
