Abstract

The concept of rûh has long been a subject of profound intellectual inquiry within Islamic thought, particularly in the field of Qur'anic exegesis. Although the Qur'an acknowledges the limited knowledge granted to humankind concerning the rûh (Q.S. al-Isrâ'/17:85), various interpretations have emerged to explore its possible meanings. This study examines the concept of rûh through the interpretation of al-Naisâbûrî in his Tafsîr Gharâ'ib al-Qur'ân wa Raghâ'ib al-Furqân. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach based on library research, this study finds that al-Naisâbûrî provides a multidimensional interpretation of rûh, encompassing meanings such as the soul, divine revelation, the angel Gabriel, and the Qur'an. His exegetical approach combines the taḥlîlî method with isyârî tendencies, reflecting an effort to integrate the exoteric and esoteric dimensions of meaning. This study contributes to the field of Qur'anic studies by highlighting al-Naisâbûrî's distinctive integration of rational, mystical, and linguistic approaches in interpreting the concept of rûh. His interpretation demonstrates the richness and diversity of exegetical approaches within classical Islamic scholarship.
