Abstract

This paper examines the effectiveness of community policing as a crime reduction strategy in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Drawing on empirical data from the Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command, the study analyses crime trends and policing outcomes between 2024 and 2025. Official police records indicate that 1,270 suspects were arrested for various offences in 2024, including 120 for murder and homicide, 38 for rape and defilement, 119 for armed robbery, and 19 for kidnapping. In 2025, arrests rose to 1,733 suspects, with major offences including 88 cases of murder, 48 cases of armed robbery, 30 cases of rape, and 156 cases of stealing. The paper argues that while community policing initiatives have contributed to increased crime reporting and suspect apprehension, significant challenges remain, including inadequate resources, weak community trust, language barriers, and the persistence of violent crimes such as cult-related attacks, armed robbery, and communal conflicts. Drawing on the Nigeria Police Act 2020 and scholarly literature on community policing, the study recommends enhanced police-community partnerships, improved intelligence gathering, the integration of indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms, and intensive community sensitization to strengthen crime prevention and control in the state.
