Abstract

Long-term use of synthetic chemical pesticides can have negative impacts on the environment and human health, while also leading to pest resistance. As an alternative, plant-based pesticides derived from local materials offer significant potential for supporting eco-friendly agriculture. This community service activity aimed to train participants in identifying and selecting local plant materials that could serve as sources of active ingredients for botanical pesticides, and to encourage a reduction in reliance on synthetic pesticides by adopting more environmentally friendly pest control methods. The methodology involved extracting active ingredients via ethanol soaking, followed by liquid formulation and testing on pest-infested plants. The results demonstrated that a combination of garlic, red chili, and papaya leaf extracts could significantly suppress pest populations, achieving an effectiveness rate of over 70% compared to the control. In conclusion, this botanical pesticide formulation offers a potential alternative for pest control that is cost-effective, easy to apply, and environmentally friendly, thereby supporting sustainable agricultural systems. Keywords: botanical pesticide, garlic, red chili, papaya leaf, crop pests.
