Abstract

The aim of this Systematic Literature Review is therefore to scope, synthesize, and state the findings of prior research on the balance between aesthetics and technological efficiency relating to 3D animation production, focusing on the uncanny valley phenomenon and stylized visual style. In the current research study, no experiments or empirical data collection are involved; instead, the literature was investigated using Scopus between 2015 and 2025, according to the methodology PRISMA. The selected articles identified, referring to 3D animation, an uncanny valley, and rendering techniques, will be systematically selected and analyzed, based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The following research questions were considered for this systematic review: To what extent does the uncanny valley influence aesthetic perception and user acceptance? What is the role of the degree of character similarity in evoking affective responses? What potential does a stylized and abstract style have for mitigating the uncanny valley effect while enhancing artistic expressiveness? By synthesis, it will be shown that a high level of photorealism has the tendency to raise the uncanny valley effect, which reduces the emotional response of the audience, while a stylized style is able to provide an effective and emotional visual design without losing any efficiency in the production process. In this direction, the findings of this systematic review will show in a conceptual way how future 3D animation will be developed by innovative, efficient design strategies, formulation supported by systematic literature reviews.
