Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common non-communicable disease among older adults and may occur as a result of decreased vascular elasticity associated with aging. Poorly controlled hypertension can lead to various complications. In addition to pharmacological therapy, laughter therapy can be used as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention to help reduce blood pressure. Objective: This study aimed to describe the application of laughter therapy to reduce blood pressure in an older adult with hypertension in the working area of Pajangan Public Health Center, Bantul. Method: This study used a descriptive case study design involving one 64-year-old female older adult with hypertension. Laughter therapy was administered for 10 minutes, three times within one week. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and blood pressure measurements using a digital blood pressure monitor before and after each intervention session. Results: A reduction in blood pressure was observed following laughter therapy. During the first session, blood pressure decreased from 142/92 mmHg to 129/85 mmHg; during the second session, from 138/92 mmHg to 134/83 mmHg; and during the third session, from 130/84 mmHg to 119/80 mmHg. The participant also reported feeling more relaxed, experiencing improved sleep quality, and having reduced complaints of neck stiffness. Conclusion: Laughter therapy may be considered a complementary non-pharmacological intervention to help reduce blood pressure in older adults with hypertension.

Abstract

Background: Fall risk among older adults is a common health problem associated with age-related decline in physical functions. Several factors may contribute to fall risk, including advanced age, sex, history of falls, comorbidities, use of walking aids, as well as impaired balance and memory. Objective: This study aimed to describe the use of the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) to assess fall risk among older adults. Method: This study used a descriptive study design involving 25 older adults who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and simple physical examinations using the Morse Fall Scale (MFS). Results:  The results showed that 12 respondents (48%) had a high risk of falls, 5 respondents (20%) had a low risk of falls, and 8 respondents (32%) had no risk of falls. Based on gait assessment, 23 respondents (92%) had no gait impairment, while 2 respondents (8%) had gait impairment. Conclusion: The Morse Fall Scale (MFS) can be used to identify fall risk levels among older adults in a quick and simple manner, thereby assisting healthcare professionals in implementing fall prevention measures.
