Abstract

The protection system on the MV Nameera failed to trigger an alarm when the pressure dropped to the 0.25 MPa threshold, resulting in a blackout. This study aims to evaluate the reliability of the pressure transmitter in detecting low lubricating oil pressure conditions, identify factors influencing its accuracy and reliability, and explain the generator shutdown mechanism triggered by low lubricating oil pressure signals in the MV Nameera's diesel generator. A qualitative case study approach was employed. Data collection involved direct observation, interviews with engine department crew members, documentation review, and a literature study. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively—utilizing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing—to assess pressure transmitter reliability, performance-influencing factors, and the shutdown mechanism associated with low oil pressure. The results indicate that pressure transmitter reliability is influenced by the sensor's condition, the cleanliness of the lubricating oil pressure line, electrical installation issues, calibration accuracy, and the performance of the lubricating oil pump. When lubricating oil pressure falls below the established set point, the pressure transmitter sends a signal to the control system, prompting the protection system to execute the generator shutdown sequence. Consequently, routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and periodic calibration are essential to maintain measurement accuracy and enhance the reliability of the diesel generator's protection system.
