Abstract

The PeulanggahanMosque in Banda Aceh serves as a historical landmark showcasing the architectural interplay between traditional Acehnese styles and modern construction techniques. This paper investigates the spatial evolution, functional transformation, and material adaptation of the mosque through qualitative analysis. Findings highlight the mosque’s pivotal role in preserving Islamic cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs. The research analyzes three primary aspects: (1) patterns of spatial expansion, (2) changes in functionality over time, and (3) reconciliation of traditional and modern architectural elements. The mosque’s adaptations following the 2004 tsunami exemplify its resilience and the community’s commitment to maintaining its cultural and religious significance. By combining traditional materials such as wood and ijuk with modern materials like concrete and glass, the mosque maintains its historical identity while addressing current requirements. Additionally, the mosque continues to function asa hub for both religious practices and socio-cultural activities, reflecting its enduring relevance to the local community. The study underscores the importance of preserving historical architecture in evolving urban contexts and provides insights for similar projects aimed at integrating heritage conservation with modern development
