Abstract

The increasing elderly population in the world and Indonesia poses a risk of malnutrition and sarcopenia, characterized by decreasing muscle mass and function that impair quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between protein consumption and physical activity with sarcopenia in the elderly. This narrative review examined 10 international original articles (2015–2025) on protein consumption, physical activity, and sarcopenia. Protein intake of 1.0–1.3 g/kg/day, as recommended by ESPEN, effectively improves muscle mass and strength in the elderly. Both animal and plant proteins benefit muscle health depending on inflammatory status and sarcopenia condition. Regular physical activity, especially strength and aerobic exercises, enhances protein sensitivity and helps prevent sarcopenia. Practical measures such as daily step count and walking speed can aid early detection. Combining adequate protein intake with regular physical activity is the most effective strategy for sarcopenia management. Additional factors such as microbiome, inflammation, and genetics should also be considered. Integrated intervention programs and further robust research are recommended.
