Abstract

Febrile seizures are one of the most common pediatric emergencies, occurring in children aged 6 months to 5 years, and inadequate parental knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills in providing initial management may increase the risk of complications. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of audiovisual education in improving parents' knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills regarding the initial management of febrile seizures in children at home in the working area of Tamamaung Public Health Center, Makassar. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test–post-test approach. The sample consisted of 51 parents of children aged 6 months to 5 years, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires before and after an audiovisual education intervention and analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 7.06±2.15 to 8.20±0.85, the mean attitude score increased from 2.41±1.28 to 4.00±0.00, and the mean practice score increased from 40.47±4.89 to 41.82±3.99. The Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in knowledge (p=0.001), attitude (p<0.001), and practice (p=0.001) after the intervention. Conclusion: Audiovisual education is effective in improving parents' knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills regarding the initial management of febrile seizures in children at home. Health workers are encouraged to use audiovisual media as a routine health-promotion tool for parents.
