Abstract

Coastal environmental degradation caused by marine debris and mangrove loss remains a challenge for coastal communities. This community service activity aimed to strengthen community engagement in coastal environmental conservation through beach clean-up, environmental education, and mangrove planting in Negeri Tawiri, Ambon City. The activity was conducted on 29 November 2025 using a participatory approach involving approximately 18 participants from local communities, youth groups, and religious organizations. Data were collected through direct observation, activity documentation, and community-reported post-planting monitoring. The beach clean-up collected approximately 70 kg of waste from about 100 meters of coastline, while 50 Rhizophora sp. seedlings were planted in a degraded coastal area. Initial monitoring in early January 2026 indicated that approximately 34 seedlings remained alive, corresponding to an estimated initial survival rate of 68%. Direct participation in environmental education, beach clean-up, and mangrove planting demonstrated active community engagement and provided participants with hands-on experience in coastal conservation. However, changes in environmental awareness and long-term behavioral change could not be quantitatively established because no structured pre–post assessment was conducted. Overall, the activity demonstrates the potential of participatory community-based approaches to support coastal waste reduction, mangrove rehabilitation, and sustainable coastal environmental management.
