Abstract

Plastic waste remains a significant environmental challenge in Indonesia. Although recycling offers a viable solution to reduce plastic waste accumulation, low public participation in waste separation limits the effectiveness of conventional recycling processes. Recently, technologies capable of processing unsorted plastic waste have emerged, including a recycled composite material developed by PT. Daur Ulang Indonesia for potential furniture applications. However, research on product development using this material remains limited. This qualitative study aimed to develop a coffee shop stool utilizing recycled composite material derived from unsorted plastic waste while addressing technical, commercial, and aesthetic requirements. Data were collected through material and manufacturing process exploration, interviews with coffee shop owners, and benchmarking of existing stool designs. Two prototype designs were developed and evaluated through a multi-stage expert validation process. The results indicate that the proposed designs demonstrated promising technical feasibility, commercial potential, and aesthetic acceptance. The study also identified several material-driven design trade-offs, including durability versus weight, assembly simplicity versus structural stiffness, finishing quality versus production cost, and shipping cost versus product weight. These findings provide practical design guidance for developing furniture products using recycled composite materials derived from unsorted plastic waste. Published Date: 2026-08-26
