Abstract

Despite documented linear relationships between future orientation and career self-efficacy globally, there remains a gap in understanding how these specific psychological variations influence upper secondary school students across different educational tracks in the Indonesian context. This study aims to examine the empirical effect of future orientation on career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE), specifically addressing this gap by analyzing how long-term cognitive awareness drives career confidence. Employing a quantitative predictive-correlational design, data were collected through a hybrid survey using adapted scales involving 576 upper secondary students from Padang City. The findings reveal that future orientation exerts a significant, robust positive influence on CDMSE, independently contributing 13.4% to its variance, with a highly positive descriptive distribution showing no students in low categories. This research contributes to the field of education by directly filling the identified geographic gap and providing empirical evidence that links internal cognitive visualization to active adolescent career tasks. The implications suggest that school counselors should pivot from merely distributing occupational brochures to designing integrated interventions that actively cultivate students' long-term goal-setting and internal control.
