Abstract

Student discipline is a fundamental aspect of character development that supports the achievement of educational goals and the creation of an orderly learning environment. However, disciplinary problems such as tardiness, violations of school regulations, incomplete uniforms, and absenteeism without permission remain common among vocational high school students, including those at SMK PGRI 3 Malang. These conditions indicate the need for effective guidance and counseling interventions to improve students’ disciplinary behavior. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of group guidance using the homeroom technique in improving student discipline at SMK PGRI 3 Malang. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. Five tenth-grade students with a moderate level of discipline were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a discipline questionnaire consisting of 30 valid items covering three dimensions: compliance with school regulations, participation in classroom learning, and responsibility for completing academic tasks. The collected data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ discipline after participating in three sessions of group guidance using the homeroom technique. The average discipline score increased from 105.6 (moderate category) to 131.2 (high category), with an average gain of 25.6 points. Statistical analysis showed an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.043 (p < 0.05), indicating that the intervention significantly improved students’ discipline. These findings demonstrate that group guidance employing the homeroom technique provides a supportive and collaborative environment that encourages students to reflect on their behavior, develop self-discipline, and comply with school regulations. Therefore, the homeroom technique can be recommended as an effective guidance and counseling strategy for enhancing discipline among vocational high school students.
