Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) and the three dimensions of Online Self-Presentation (OSP), namely Adaptable Self (OSPAD), Authentic Self (OSPA), and Freedom of Self Online (OSPFOS), with Online Social Support (OSS) as a mediator. Higher levels of ON-FoMO among university students may create a sense of obligation to remain active and visible on social media, potentially at the expense of authenticity. Alternatively, social support may help students develop a more strategic approach to self-presentation on social media. This study involved 363 university students in Malang. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and mediation analysis with JASP and SPSS. The results indicated that ON-FoMO was negatively associated with OSPA and positively associated with OSPAD and OSPFOS. Furthermore, OSS significantly mediated the relationships between ON-FoMO and OSPAD (β = .021, p = .039), OSPA (β = .047, p = .003), and OSPFOS (β = .024, p = .021). These findings highlight the importance of healthy digital social connections in understanding the psychological effects of ON-FoMO on online self-presentation among university students.
