Abstract

Background: Online game addiction has become an increasingly common problem among university students and may negatively affect various aspects of health, including sleep quality. Spending excessive time playing online games can disrupt sleep patterns, resulting in poor sleep quality. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between online game addiction and sleep quality among undergraduate nursing students. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 259 students were recruited using proportionate quota sampling. Data were collected using the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale Short Form (IGDS9-SF) to assess online game addiction and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Results: The findings showed that 134 respondents (51.7%) had a moderate level of online game addiction, 106 respondents (40.9%) had a low level of addiction, and 19 respondents (7.3%) had a high level of addiction. Regarding sleep quality, 188 respondents (72.6%) had poor sleep quality, while 71 respondents (27.4%) had good sleep quality. The Chi-square test revealed a significant relationship between online game addiction and sleep quality among students (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between online game addiction and sleep quality among undergraduate nursing students. Students are encouraged to manage their gaming time appropriately to prevent interference with sleep and academic activities.
