Abstract

Background: Academic stress is one of the problems students may experience due to various demands during the learning process. Ten-grade students are in a transitional period from junior high school to high school and therefore need to adapt to a new environment, learning system, and academic demands. Social support from family, friends, and significant others can help students cope with academic pressure. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between social support and academic stress among 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Cimahi. Method: This study employed a quantitative method with an analytical survey design and a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 468 students, and the sample comprised 215 respondents selected using the proportionate random sampling technique. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire and the Academic Stress Scale, then analysed univariately and bivariate using the chi-square test. Results: The majority of respondents reported high levels of social support 111 students (51.6%) and low levels of academic stress 159 students (74.0%). The results of the Chi-Square test showed a p-value <0.001 (p ≤ 0.05), indicating a significant association between social support and academic stress. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between social support and academic stress among 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Cimahi. Students with higher levels of social support tend to experience lower levels of academic stress.
