Abstract

Porous asphalt is an alternative pavement mixture designed to reduce surface water accumulation through interconnected air voids. However, increasing air voids generally decreases the mechanical performance of the mixture. This study evaluated the effect of adding Buton Natural Asphalt (Asbuton) LGA B50/30 on the characteristics of porous Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC). An experimental laboratory method was employed using coarse and fine aggregates obtained from the Ex-Kema Quarry, North Minahasa, combined with 60/70 penetration asphalt and Asbuton LGA B50/30 as an additive at 5%, 6%, and 7% of the total mixture weight. Aggregate gradation was designed according to the Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) specification, while Marshall and constant-head permeability tests were conducted to evaluate the mixture performance. The aggregate gradation satisfied the specified limits and was suitable for porous asphalt production. Marshall test results indicated that all mixtures fulfilled the porous asphalt requirements. The highest stability was obtained at 6% Asbuton with a value of 796.19 kg, while the corresponding flow, Marshall Quotient (MQ), and Void in Mix (VIM) values were 3.48 mm, 229.30 kg/mm, and 19.23%, respectively. Increasing the Asbuton content reduced the VIM from 20.16% to 18.44% and decreased the permeability coefficient from 0.18 cm/s to 0.16 cm/s, although all mixtures remained within the specified permeability range. These findings indicate that Asbuton LGA B50/30 improves the mechanical characteristics of porous AC-WC while maintaining adequate drainage performance, with 6% Asbuton providing the most balanced overall performance.
