Abstract

Coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) remain dominant in Indonesia's electricity mix and are a major contributor to national CO2 emissions, while the government targets an emission reduction of up to 43.20% by 2030 and Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Sawdust biomass co-firing and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) are two decarbonization options for existing CFPPs, yet their combined effect on the technical, economic, and environmental performance of a subcritical pulverized coal (PC) unit has not been widely studied in an integrated manner. This study analyzes the effect of sawdust biomass co-firing ratio variation (5-30%) combined with MEA-based post-combustion CCS on the technical performance, economics, and CO2 emission intensity of a 350 MW subcritical PC power plant, as well as the sensitivity of its economic feasibility to carbon prices, using IECM 13.0 simulation software. The results show that biomass co-firing incurs only a minor performance penalty, whereas CCS reduces net power output from 314.34 MW to 206.26 MW and net efficiency from 31.08% to 18.85%. The Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) increases by approximately 219% after CCS implementation, from 0.0514 to 0.1638-0.1669 USD/kWh, while net CO2 emissions reach carbon neutrality at a 10% co-firing ratio and continue to decline to a negative value (-0.3392 kg/kWh) at a 30% co-firing ratio with CCS. Carbon price is shown to be the most dominant factor determining the economic feasibility of CCS, with the effective LCOE approaching the national average at a carbon price of around 100 USD/tCO2.
