Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the descriptive writing competence of third-semester English Language Education students at Institut Agama Islam Nahdlatul Ulama (IAINU) Bangil. The research aims to examine the current state of students' descriptive writing abilities, identify prevalent challenges, and explore factors influencing their writing performance within an Indonesian Islamic higher education context. Employing a case study methodology, the researcher collected data through systematic analysis of writing samples from 25 participants, conducted semi-structured interviews, and performed classroom observations. The findings reveal significant variation in descriptive writing competence among participants, with notable strengths in fundamental vocabulary application and basic sentence construction, while demonstrating persistent difficulties in textual coherence, organizational structure, and sophisticated linguistic features. The study identifies substantial influence of Indonesian linguistic and cultural transfer on English descriptive writing patterns. These findings provide valuable insights for English language educators and curriculum developers seeking to enhance writing pedagogy for Indonesian EFL learners in Islamic educational contexts.
