Abstract

Background: Learning independence is an essential 21st century capability required for students to navigate modern education, yet high academic dependency remains widespread. Objective: This study aims to analyze and synthesize the role of individual counseling services in fostering student learning independence based on previous empirical findings. Method: A literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach was conducted, analyzing 15 relevant scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025 using content analysis. Result: The review reveals that individual counseling significantly enhances self regulation capabilities, academic responsibility, study discipline, decision making, and learning time management. Furthermore, behavior modification tools, particularly self management and positive reinforcement techniques, prove to be highly effective operational strategies within counseling sessions. Conclusion: Individual counseling serves as a vital therapeutic intervention that successfully transforms student learning behaviors from external reliance toward sustainable autonomy. Contribution: This research strengthens the theoretical integration of self regulated learning with counseling practices, providing an empirical foundation for school counselors to implement evidence-based guidance strategies.
