Abstract

This research analyzes the semantic meaning of QS. al-A‘rāf verse 22 through a comparative study between the classical tafsir Jāmi‘ al-Bayān by Imam al-Ṭabarī and the scientific tafsir Azanal-An‘ām by Sheikh Imad Muhammad Babakar Hasan, an Egyptian doctor. The focus is on key phrases: fa-dallāhumā bi-ghurūr, badat lahumā sawātuhumā, and wa-ṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ‘alayhimā min waraq al-jannah. A qualitative method with a library research approach and semantic analysis is employed. Primary data are drawn from both tafsir works, while secondary data come from tafsir literature, Qur'anic semantics, and Arabic linguistics. The findings show that al-Ṭabarī uses a tradition-based approach (bi al-ma’tsūr), relying on Arabic language, hadith, and the sayings of companions and successors. In contrast, the scientific tafsir develops a contextual interpretation by linking the verses to scientific, psychological, and human aspects, without abandoning the moral message. Both agree on the basic meaning but differ in their development and orientation. Al-Ṭabarī preserves textual authority, while the scientific tafsir expands relevance to modern knowledge. This study demonstrates that different interpretive approaches enrich meaning without undermining the substance of the Qur'an
