Abstract

This study responds to two opposing assumptions: that moral perfection is a prerequisite for covering the awrah and that compliance with Islamic dress can be separated from its spiritual dimension. It aims to examine the relationship between the command to cover the awrah in Surah al-Nūr verse 31 and the concept of libās al-taqwā in Surah al-A‘rāf verse 26 through the interpretations of al-Qurṭubī, Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī, and M. Quraish Shihab. This qualitative library research employs a comparative Qur’anic exegesis (muqāran) method. Primary data consist of the two verses and the three exegetes’ interpretations, while secondary data are drawn from books and scholarly articles. The data are analyzed by identifying linguistic elements and verse contexts, comparing the interpretations, and constructing a conceptual synthesis. The findings indicate that covering the awrah constitutes an outward religious obligation that does not depend on the attainment of moral perfection, whereas libās al-taqwā represents inward qualities of piety, modesty, and righteous conduct. The two verses therefore reveal a processual relationship between outward obedience and moral formation rather than a hierarchy that separates them. This finding positions covering the awrah as part of spiritual development and discourages moral judgment against those undergoing that process
