Abstract

This study aims to analyze the value of ta’awun (mutual assistance) in the Qur’an through a thematic interpretation (maudẓū‘ī) and its implementation in post-flood trauma healing activities conducted by volunteers from the Gerakan Sumut Mengajar in Batuhula Village, Batang Toru District, in 2025. This qualitative study employed observation, interviews with four informants, and documentation, with data analyzed through reduction, presentation, and verification. The thematic interpretation focused on QS. Al-Ma’idah [5]: 2 and QS. Al-Taubah [9]: 71. The findings indicate that ta’awun encompasses both a vertical dimension in relation to Allah and a horizontal dimension in relation to others, as explained by Ibn Kathir and M. Quraish Shihab as an obligation to support one another in goodness, including during disasters. Interviews with Zahra, Nainggolan, Marnik, and Ratna demonstrate that activities such as play-based assistance, learning, joint coloring, educational games, and psychosocial support reflect the practical implementation of ta’awun. These activities were supported by the victims’ openness and collaboration with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and medical personnel, although recurring psychological anxiety and unmet material needs remained challenges. The study concludes that ta’awun can serve as a normative foundation for volunteer-based post-disaster recovery while remaining distinct from clinical psychological interventions, emphasizing the strengthening of social solidarity and community resilience.
