Abstract

This is the revised author guidelines and article template of the Jurnal Aplikasi Pelayaran and Abstract: This study aims to analyse the types and causes of container damage, evaluate the mitigation strategies implemented, and analyse the impact of container damage on the smooth distribution of logistics at PT. Lintas Kumala Abadi Surabaya. The study uses a qualitative approach with an empirical case study method during the Land Practice (PRADA) activities for the period July 2025–January 2026. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with inventory operational staff, field operations, and drivers, as well as direct observation and Estimate of Repair (EOR) documents. The results showed that the dominant types of damage included dents on walls, corrosion on bottom rails, leaks/holes in the roof (roof holes), worn rubber gaskets, damaged plywood floors, and dysfunction of the locking system (door locking system). The main causes of damage are divided into human factors (human error in handling heavy equipment) and maritime environmental factors (high salinity and extreme weather). The company implemented preventive mitigation (pre-trip inspection and 3-month training), operational mitigation (digital group coordination and fleet monitoring), and corrective mitigation (EOR-based physical repairs). The implementation of mitigation has proven effective in minimising the risk of cargo damage, preventing unexpected costs (demurrage/claims), and maintaining the smoothness and reliability of multimodal logistics distribution.
