Abstract

This study aims to explore and redefine the professional responsibilities of school principals in the context of modern educational management, as well as to analyze their impact on institutional performance at SMA Darussalam Blokagung, Banyuwangi, East Java. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis over six months. Informants comprised 17 participants from seven stakeholder categories. The findings reveal that the principal has integrated traditional administrative roles with transformational leadership grounded in pesantren. Five dimensions of responsibility were identified: (1) visionary Islamic leadership; (2) integrative curriculum management; (3) human resource capacity building; (4) community relations and strategic partnerships; and (5) accountability-based financial management. These findings contribute to an indigenous Islamic educational leadership theory and offer practical implications for principal competency development.
