Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ experiences in developing self-confidence through Muhadharah activities at Ma’had al-Jami’ah UIN Raden Intan Lampung and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors involved in the process. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of students who had participated in Muhadharah activities at least four times. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model with the assistance of NVivo 15 software. The findings indicate that students’ self-confidence develops gradually through continuous practice, performance experiences, social support, and self-reflection. Supporting factors include encouragement from peers, mentors, family, and audiences, while inhibiting factors include stage fright, self-doubt, limited abilities, and lack of material mastery. These experiences contribute to increased confidence in public speaking, the ability to manage anxiety, and stronger belief in personal abilities. This study provides a new perspective on the process of developing students’ self-confidence based on their lived experiences in Muhadharah activities through a phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that Muhadharah serves not only as a medium for public speaking practice but also as a self-development space shaped by personal experiences, social support, and self-reflection.
