Abstract

In the past, people had to visit markets or stores to shop; today, however, advancements in information technology have made the process much easier and more convenient. Yet, these new methods also present challenges and risks for consumers who lack vigilance or sufficient knowledge regarding online shopping. Some of the main issues associated with online shopping include products failing to meet expectations, fraud, delivery delays, and complicated refund processes. Common obstacles encountered during online transactions include: items that do not match the description or are defective (where the actual product differs from the description); delivery delays (where courier estimates are missed due to logistical issues); fraud and fake discounts; and critical purchasing errors (such as a lack of attention to terms and conditions, which often leads to disappointment).Incidents of online fraud are on the rise, and the methods used by perpetrators are becoming increasingly diverse. Online fraud can and should be reported, and Indonesian law provides a robust legal basis for prosecuting offenders. Victims’ hesitation generally stems not from a lack of applicable laws, but rather from a lack of knowledge regarding procedures, the relevant authorities, and what to expect from the legal process.Given the numerous issues the public faces regarding online shopping, I intend to provide guidance—specifically legal awareness—to help people shop online safely. My focus is on teaching how to recognize online shopping scams so that consumers can shop securely.
