Abstract

This study discusses the portrait of the daily life of women of the Talang Mamak Tribe in the midst of modernization. Talang Mamak women have an important role in the family, social, and cultural life of indigenous peoples. They not only play the role of housewives, but are also involved in economic activities and cultural preservation, such as gardening, fishing, cooking in traditional ceremonies, mutual cooperation, and educating children. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through interviews and documentation. The location of the research was conducted in Talang Jerinjing Village, West Rengat District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. The results of the study show that modernization has an influence on the lives of Talang Mamak women in the fields of education, technology, economy, and social patterns of society. Modernization has a positive impact in the form of increased access to education, information, and economic opportunities, but also causes a shift in cultural values and a reduction in the involvement of the younger generation in traditional traditions. Nevertheless, Talang Mamak women still strive to maintain their cultural identity through the implementation of traditional activities, the use of regional languages, the value of mutual cooperation, and the inheritance of traditions to the younger generation. Thus, Talang Mamak women are able to adapt to developments without leaving behind cultural values inherited by their ancestors.
