Abstract

This research investigates the reverse engineering process applied to the XYZ portable vacuum cleaner. The primary objective is to address declining suction performance, with a focus on enhancing suction capacity and design efficiency utilizing the Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) methodology. The performance degradation was attributed to operational wear and the absence of a Battery Management System (BMS). The reverse engineering procedure involved systematic disassembly, component identification, dimensional measurement, material analysis, and the reconstruction of technical drawings via CAD, followed by precise modifications. The battery was replaced and integrated with a BMS module; the impeller shroud was redesigned using a snap-fit mechanism, and the filter seal was integrated with a HEPA filter. Post-modification testing demonstrated significant performance enhancements: average airflow velocity increased from 9.73 m/s to 17.45 m/s (79.3%), suction capacity rose from 0.3503 m³/s to 0.6282 m³/s (79.3%), and suction power increased from 0.017 W to 0.097 W (476.3%). DFMA analysis indicated that assembly time was reduced from 87.46 seconds to 74.96 seconds, and assembly costs decreased from IDR 1,313 to IDR 1,125. Furthermore, DFA efficiency improved from 41.4% to 47.7%. These results validate that integrating reverse engineering with DFMA is an effective strategy for enhancing both the functional performance and manufacturing efficiency of portable vacuum cleaners.
